Cirilasso

About
José Luis Montero Vélez, known artistically as Cirilasso, is a Mexican painter whose work explores the world of bullfighting through a deeply personal, symbolic, and expressive lens. Born in Orizaba, Veracruz, Cirilasso is not just a witness to the tradition—he lived it. As a former bullfighter, his paintings are infused with lived experience, transforming the arena into a space of emotional tension, ritual, and aesthetic drama. His expressive brushwork and intense color palette turn each canvas into a visceral reflection of memory, movement, and cultural identity.
Cirilasso’s path is defined by a rare fusion: the artist who was also a bullfighter. Trained in the ring by masters such as Carlos Serrano “El Voluntario” and Jesús Salazar, he later channeled that knowledge into visual art. His paintings focus on scenes of the corrida, iconic matador figures, and the ritualistic elements of the bullfight, expressed through dynamic composition and gestural intensity. His work has been featured in cultural spaces across Mexico, and in 2023 he participated in a prominent charity auction in Aguascalientes alongside artists and bullfighters, reaffirming his commitment to the cultural legacy of tauromachia. Through exhibitions and social media, he continues to build a strong presence as one of Mexico’s most authentic voices in contemporary bullfighting art.
